Adult Group Classes

8-week Wheel Throwing class

The wheel classes are available to all skill levels. All our classes are small enough to allow for individual attention and our teachers are more than happy to provide it! There is no lock-step curriculum. While the instructor demonstrates a wide-variety of techniques, the choice of projects is dependent upon the interest and ability of the individual. We begin by mastering simple shapes such as cylinders (cups and mugs), bowls and vases. When shapes are leather hard the student will trim their pieces on the wheel or by hand. When the piece is dry, our technitians bisque fire the pieces and in the final two weeks the students paint their items. Items may be functional, fanciful, decorative, artful, or any combinations of these qualities!

8-week Handbuilding Class

Hand-building classes are taught to all levels. Pinch-pots, coiled pots, and slab-built work are all taught and their techniques are combined to create original and unique masterpieces. A broad spectrum of glazes are available to the hand-builder. Students will learn to create bowls, mugs, platters, plates, vases, wall plaques, jewellery and a variety of other sculptures. The instructor begins each week with a handbuilding demonstration teaching important techniques which students will apply when building their creations. What the student makes is entirely up to them and their imagination!

5-week Introduction to mold Making/Slip casting

Students will be introduced to the basics of mold making and slip casting. With the aid of an instructor, students will develop a form to model and make into a plaster mold. With this mold, the technique of slip casting will be utilized to repeatedly produce the form. This process is ideal for making replicas or sets of the same form. Students will experience the development, setup, making, firing and glazing aspects of their design and come out of this course with a completely functional set of ceramic objects. All materials and firing included in course fee.

What is mold making?

In the context of this course, mold making is a technique in which a plaster mold is made and used to duplicate forms over and again by pouring slip into it and releasing the form from the mold

What is Slip Casting?

Slip casting involves pouring slip (a liquid clay body) into a plaster mold. It then forms a layer as the plaster absorbs the liquid. Remaining slip is poured out and a greenware form is produced.
